Threat Level Framework

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists' Doomsday Clock has helped educate and alert the public as to the risk posed by nuclear weapons. More recently it has been extended to include the threat of climate change and technological risks, including the dangers associated with killer robots.

Similarly up until 2011, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security used a color-coded terror alert level to communicate the threat of terrorism to the public.

For smarter-than-human-level AI risk a similar scheme that is regularly updated could be used to communicate the time until the point of no return is reached and/or the possible end of humanity.

Such a scheme would be relatively easy to set up, and might attract media interest. The big unknown is whether such interest would make a difference.
